Students of Moshood Abiola Polytechnic, MAPOLY, Abeokuta have taken to the street to express their grievance against exorbitant charges in the school and the delay in the appointment of a substantive rector for the institution.

It was gathered that the students’ body, during the protest held in front of the school gate are equally demanding the for the reconstruction of road leading to the school. The students reportedly blocked the institution gate while chanting solidarity songs to express their grievance.

According to Roots TV The protest which has been on for two days had attracted the presence of security personnel as they were seen trying to enforce order at the school entrance. The students carried placards with various inscriptions, including “Fix MAPOLY Road”, “Security personnel, we don’t have one,” “We Don’t want Acting Rector,” “We deserve substantive Rector,” among others.

While addressing journalists, the State Chairman of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Damilola Simeon stated the students demanded the replacement of the institution acting rector Mr Odedeji.

Mr. Simeon gave the state Governor, Prince Dr. Dapo Abiodun a forty-eight-hour ultimatum to appoint a substantive Rector after which he vowed the protest will take a new dimension.

According to report from Nigeria Tribune, institution’s Public Relations Officer (PRO), Mr Yemi Ajibola, when contacted said the action of the students was “politically-motivated.”

The PRO said all the issues raised by the students had been adequately attended to by the institution’s management. He, however, said a fresh dimension to the protest was masterminded by some unscrupulous elements.
